You better Belize it

I didn't know much about Belize prior to visiting a couple of months ago and I was blown away!

This Central American gem is full of fun activities, crystal clear water and the friendliest locals I think I've ever encountered.

Belize is often overlooked for a holiday, but has so much to offer. Long known as a scuba divers haven, there is a lot to do besides diving. So let's dive in...

Travelling from Canada or the US, there are direct flights to Belize and we opted for the direct flight with Westjet from Calgary to Belize City. Once we arrived in capital we quickly made our way to our modest digs. Taxis are easily accessible from the airport and the price is negotiable, although most drivers seem to ask a similar price.

You can make your way from Belize City to the Mayan ruins inland or jump over to one of the idyllic islands. We opted for the latter!

You can visit one of the picturesque islands via ferry or a short flight. We decided to take the ferry, which was affordable and had a variety of departure times each day. No need to make a reservation unless travelling during peak time.

Our first stop was Caye Caulker! This small island is only 8km (5 miles) from North to south and less than an 1.6km (1 mile) east to west. There are approximately 2,000 residents living on the island today.

The motto here is 'go slow" and they really do. Prepare to relax, wait for your food, and soak up the Caribbean vibes. Be sure to have the lobster tail at Wish Willy's, a drink or two at one of the bars on the Spit and breakfast at Ice n beans, which also happens to have one of the best beach areas to relax!

I would highly recommend staying at Jan's Hotel which is central to all of the local sights and restaurants.

Belize insider tips:

Belize has some of the most adorable lobster dishes around.

Belize is generally safe, but be mindful of your belongings in public spaces, especially in Belize City.

Belize uses their local currency BZD, but also accepts USD.

Best time of year to visit:

Some may say Belize is a year-round destination, and while this may be true for some activities, the best time to travel to Belize is January - May for dry, warm weather.
